PennEnergy: Nigeria plans to expand European natural gas exports

Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (NNPC) said it plans on increasing its gas exports in Europe, Platts reported. The state-owned oil and natural gas firm said it could make these gas shipments through the port of Antwerp. Nigeria exports nearly 22 million metric tons per year of liquefied natural gas from the LNG Plant at Bonny Island and has 187 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves - the ninth biggest in the world.

"Europe is a good market for gas," NNPC CEO Andrew Yakubu said during a meeting in Abuja. "We are working on independently marketing our abundant gas resources to Europe."

Earlier this month, NNPC said the company receives 300 requests from foreign investors each month, which could help with gas exports. Ohi Alegbe, general manager of public affairs at NNPC, said the company and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs need to work together to speed up these requests.

"We need good understanding because NNPC and Foreign Affairs Ministry have a lot in common to ensure that Nigeria benefits from either exports or imports," Minister of Foreign Affairs Amb Wali said.
